The major players in the colonisation of South Australia are:

  • Explorer Matthew Flinders: the first European to explore the southern coast, investigating possibilities for settlement, in 1802.
  • Explorer Charles Sturt: the first European to trace the Murray River to the sea, doing so in 1829. Through this exploration, he reinforced the viability of a settlement on the southern coast as the Murray River would make transportation of goods and people easier than sea travel.
  • Captain Colette Barker, sent by Governor Darling to explore southern Australia, following Charles Sturt's discoveries of the mouth of the Murray River. Barker explored around the eastern side of Gulf St Vincent, climbed Mt Lofty, and determined a suitable port for the future city of Adelaide.
  • Colonel Light who, in 1836, arrived in South Australia to decide on a suitable site for a new settlement, following up on Barker's discoveries.
  • One of the major groups to originally settle South Australia were the German Lutherans. Thanks to wealthy Scottish businessman and chairman of the South Australian Company, George Fife Angas, a deal was struck by Pastor August Kavel to start a new Lutheran settlement in South Australia. The first group of Lutherans arrived in November 1838, on two ships. They first settled at the town of Klemzig. Many more ships followed over the next three years.
