The National winner of the "Search for Australia Most Helpful Person" taking home a $100,000 Grant by American Express Australia and supported by Oprah Winfrey is Dianne Carroll, founder and CEO of the Trans-Help Foundation, a National Foundation that supports transport personnel and their families.
For the past five years Carroll has committed herself 24 hours a day to build a foundation that now has enormous worth to the transport industry, tackling physical and mental health issues as well as providing support for families of the drivers who fall victim to the side effects of the industry, including depression, road trauma or loss of lives.
From humble beginnings in a canvas tent with a card table, Carroll was able to garner enough support to purchase a building - a former aged-care facility - in Tarcutta, NSW 18 months ago but it's a charity that still largely has to fend for itself and is still paying for the building.
With near 4000 deaths within the industry in the last 20 years, ten times that injured and twenty times that suffering road trauma and Trans-Help being the only national transport support service, the need is very strong.
"Winning has resulted in highlighting the need of the services we provide and will now give us a grant base to help us grow more and help more suffering within the industry. More importantly, this is a win for the Transport Industry across the Nation at the grass roots level.
"Australia has voted ! The Transport Industry has voted! We are now hopeful that the government and the corporates of the industry will finally realise the importance of our foundation and the urgent need for funding" Carroll said.
Carroll, along with Mari Benson, who was widowed earlier this year and nominated Mrs Carroll because of the support she received, both attended the Oprah Show at the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday. Carroll was earlier this year awarded an Order of Australia Medal as part of the Queen's Birthday 2010 Honours List.
