Neither major party has officially nominated a candidate yet. Barack Obama, a Democrat and the incumbent President in his first term, will almost certainly be the Democratic Party's nominee in 2012. The Republican picture is far less clear. A great many names have been mentioned (Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Tim Pawlenty, etc.) but until the primary season begins in early 2012 it's almost impossible to make any accurate predictions.

The two major party candidates for 2012 are the Democratic incumbent Barack Obama versus the Republican Mitt Romney. As usual, there are several minor party candidates, most of whose names appears only on a few states' ballots.

Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, and Ron Paul were the strongest challengers to Mitt Romney for the Republican Nomination . Barack Obama had no opposition for the Democratic nomination.
