These transcontinental railroads reduced the time that it took to travel across the U. S. A. from weeks to days.

And finally cattle ranchers in Texas saw a way to make a lot of money. They could feed cattle cheaply on the grasslands. And with the new railroads they could transport the cattle to eastern cites where people were hungry for meat.

In the years after the Civil War, cattle owners hired men called cowboys to drive their cattle north to the railroads. The cattle traveled along regular routes called trails. At the start the cowboys moved the herds quickly, but then they slowed down. It was very important to give the cattle a lot of time to graze, because they should be as heavy as possible when they were sold. Where the cattle trails met the railroads new towns grew up. This way more and more towns began to exist.
