Black Tom Island was purposely set afire in 1916. It was loaded with munitions that were scheduled for the war in Europe. We were not in the war yet, but German saboteurs placed small pencil bombs to start the fires. These were chemical timed bombs that they placed in various buildings and ships. The fires set off the explosives, and the explosions were heard for many hours.
