Daleks originate from the planet Skaro, where they were masterminded by the brilliant but evil scientist Davros.
They go back to one of The Doctor's earliest adventures, when William Hartnell was playing the First Doctor. The TARDIS landed on Skaro which was inhabited by two races, the Kaleds and the Thals. Although they were both essentially humanoid, they hated each other and had been locked in a bitter war for control of the planet for so many Centuries no-one could remember when the war began! The war had wiped out most of their races, devastated the planet, exhausted it's resources and left it's surface so polluted that the two respective races were confined to living in sealed domed cities. Military technology had become so depleted that they were forced to continue fighting with outdated WW1-era weapons, their soldiers using ancient rifles and not even having any uniforms, instead wearing animal skins.
The Doctor and his two companions are captured by a Kaled trooper and taken back to HQ as suspected Thal agents. However, when they gradually learn that he is a Time Lord they come to respect him and ask for his help in defeating the Thals. The Doctor is reluctant to get involved in the war, but when his two companions are kidnapped by Thal agents to be used as slave labour in building a gigantic atomic bomb that they hope will finish the Kaleds forever, The Doc throws his lot in with the Kaleds. He soon discovers that they have one last trick up their sleeve- the brilliant but more or less insane scientist Davros, who has himself been seriously injured in the war and is confined to a motorised mobility device. He is blind, and sees instead through an electronic eye of his own devising that is mounted on his forehead. Davros has perfected a genetically engineered species of creature that he calls the Daleks (Dalek being 'Kaled' spelt backwards). Specifically designed to have all emotions removed from their psyches except hatred, fear and a mania for domination, they are housed in the conical metal armoured war machines that we recognise as Daleks today, equipped with massively powerful laser cannon, sucker arms that can crush almost anything, and their exteriors covered in hemispherical landmines.
Davros is convinced that his new masterpieces will ensure Kaled victory, but The Doctor has his doubts about it. He does not trust Davros, believing that his motives go way beyond defeating the Thals, and rethinks his alliance with the Kaled forces. His main motive is to rescue his two companions, which he ultimately succeeds in doing but not without some Kaled prisoners giving their own lives to secure their release.
The three of them then get back to the TARDIS and get off the planet as soon as they can. I am unsure of how events on Skaro conclude, but this is how the Daleks came into being in the first place.

THey first appeared in 1963, in an episode called 'The Daleks'. There was a Doctor Who movie called 'Doctor Who and The Daleks', But I'm not sure when that was released.
No, but 'Evolution of the Daleks' is. Season 3, episode 6 with David Tennant as the Doctor.
Many. You may remember the Genesis Ark from the episode Doomsday, which stored millions of Daleks inside of it. These aren't even the only ones, as in Journey's End, there are about that many Daleks again. So, in short, it is impossible to count the number of Daleks appearing on Doctor Who.
Yes
Daleks have a strict caste system, daleks are born into various roles. The bronze daleks in the Parliament of the Daleks are regular rank and file soldier daleks.

As revealed in Daleks in Manhatten/Eveloution of the Daleks, the Daleks are made out a metal called Dalekanium. The base of the dalek also provides a pickup for static electricity
The Supreme Dalek is the ruler of the renagade daleks. The renegade daleks are the daleks that don't obey Davros and the ones who arrested him for crimes against the Daleks in "Revelation of the Daleks". The Emperor is the ruler of the imperial daleks, the ones that were recreated by Davros in "Revelation of the Daleks". In the earlier years of the Daleks, The Daleks are ruled by the Supreme Council, of which the Supreme Dalek Was the head of. This now brings us into the different colours of Daleks. The Red Dalek is the supreme. The Black is the leaders of the warriors and the grey (In the new series, Gold) are the ordinary Daleks. The Daleks in "Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways" Are Imperial Daleks, because they were lead by the emperor. The Daleks that fought the Time War would've been Imperial Daleks too, because Davros was there as well. It is possible however, that both Dalek factions were fighting, their differences put aside to exterminate the Time Lords. This is never made clear. The Daleks in "The Stolen Earth/Journeys End" Are Renegade Daleks. Davros created them, but they have obviously turned against him, keeping him in a vault. The Cult of Skaro could be either, but most probally Renegade Daleks because the Doctor said that he thought they were just a legend, which implies that they are old. Older then the Imperial Daleks. But they didn't like the fact that Rose had destryed the Emperor, and the Doctor said that they were above the emperor. So who knows? I'd also like to add that Dalek Caan rescued Davros, so the Cult of Skaro could be Imperial Daleks. And the Doctor said in "Daleks in Mahatten/Evolution of the Daleks" that they were created by the Emperor, so they have to be Imperial Daleks. Some evidence that the Daleks might have re-united in the Time War is that all Daleks are now standerdly gold, like the Imperial Daleks were White and Gold. However in the episodes "Evil of the Daleks" , "Day of the Daleks" and "Death to the Daleks" , there was no set colour to the daleks, they were all sorts of colours and definitely not Grey or White & Gold. And that was before the Daleks were divided into the 'Renegade' and 'Imperial' factions and yet there is a Dalek Emeror in "Evil of the Daleks". How can this be? Could this be that due to the daleks being unified, there was no need for 'uniforms'. But this still doesn't explain the Emperor Dalek being there. the new Daleks' rank is determined by their colour. white= supreme, orange= scientist, yellow= eternal, red= drone, blue=strategist
