Like all skyscrapers, a vanity project. In the good old days, a big pyramid was a symbol of your importance, and later on a cathedral filled the desire. With the arrival of technology, came bridges and hydro dams, and atomic power plants are a current equivalent. Tall towers are a modern phase.

The Petronas Twin Towers took 7 years to build. The two towers were built by different companies. Tower 1 was built by a Japanese consortium, while Tower 2 was built by a group of South Korean companies. Interestingly enough, while Tower 1 started construction first, Tower 2 was completed faster.
