Some believe that the English Mark I was the first combat tank, but this is not entirely true. While the Mark I was the first tank deployed into combat, it was not the first built.
There are a few that hold the distinction of first, and only by vagaries of language is one not the superlative.
- Consider the German Burstyn-Motorgeschütz. First considered in 1903 when the designer, Oberleutnant Günther Burstyn rode aboard a naval torpedo boat. Burstyn continued to develop his idea until he presented it to the German Army in 1911. Burstyn's design was declined, and the Motorgeschütz was never deployed.
- Then there was the French Renault FT17. The FT17 was conceived in 1911, but was not put into production until after WW1, in 1918. The FT17 had all of the design elements of the modern combat tank: tracks, pivoting turret, forward crew compartment, and rear engine. A light tank (roughly 6,000 pounds, the FT held a crew of two: a driver and a gunner, and remaind in use until 1945.
- And finally, the Lebedenko Tank, or Tsar Tank. Designed by Nicholas Lebedenko in 1914 for Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, the monster of all tanks weighed in at over 60 tons, was driven by two massive nine meter high spoked front wheels, and was steared by smaller dual wheels. Modern military equipment experts still debate whether the Tsar Tank was actually a tank or wheeled artillery, but it has elements of both, and its armored nature and intened use in front line battle leans a bit more on the tank-side of the fence. Only one Tsar Tank was ever built. It was demonstrated for Tsar Nicholas August 1915. The tank moved under its own power, smashed over a tree and drove over it, then got it's rear wheels stuck in a ditch and the front wheel became mired in soft ground. The Tsar tank drove about fifty meters total, then sat abandoned for eight years and was finally dismantled for scrap. If plans had moved ahead to fit this behemouth with larger engines, the world of tank combat might have been a vastly different place.
