Some believe that the English Mark I was the first combat tank, but this is not entirely true. While the Mark I was the first tank deployed into combat, it was not the first built.
There are a few that hold the distinction of first, and only by vagaries of language is one not the superlative.
The British and the Mark I
Negative. The British introduced the first tank, and it was during WWI. The Germans built only one type of tank in WWI and they only built 21 of them...the A7V; it was built in 1917 and looked like a crawling shoe box.

The concept of, and variants of, tanks first began in the Ancient era. However, tanks as we know them today were first created for the First World War. The first tank built in the UK was also the first tank built anywhere - 'Little Willie' was finished in September 1915.
The first M-4 Shermans were built in 1941, and first went into combat in 1942.

The first US built tank was a copy of the French Renault FT-17 or Model 1917. Less than 1,000 were ordered and built in the US in 1918. The M1917 that was constructed in the US under license, was called the "Six Ton Tank" M1917.
