The South's whole economy was based off of exporting goods such as cotton to places like Britain and France. When the Union blockaded the South's ports, the Southern economy took a turn for the worst. Sooner or later Robert E. Lee would have to march his troops into the north to steal supplies because the southern government didn't have enough for them.
The naval blockade - it took some time to implement, but it was highly effective. Refusal to trade with the South - so the South had to depend on the Confederate dollar, which became worthless. Punitive raids on Georgia, South Carolina and the Shenandoah Valley - wrecking the farms and railroads, and helping to starve the enemy troops in the field.
The CSA's economy was almost completley built on agriculture and importaiton/exportation of resources. With the plan that general Winfield Scott developed, the North hoped to cripple the South economically and bring them to their knees
