i may be wrong but i believe what we know now as metal started with black sabbath (originally a blues band), i think it had something to do with the guitarists injuring his fingers and only have 3 to play with so the music sounded darker and they went from there. there where a few bands before then that some argue to also be metal, led zeppelin also came in at about the same time

The band was originally called Earth but when they found out that there was another band called Earth they changed their name to Black Sabbath. There are several pioneers of heavy metal music: AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Rainbow, and Deep Purple are good examples. Black Sabbath is the first heavy metal band. Their approach was more of a sludge/doom metal style. If you want to get extremely technical about it, Beethoven was the first metal head.

AC/DC sold more records than Black Sabbath, but Sabbath came before AC/DC, have a larger body of work, and are more versatile musicians.
