Read Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jarod Diamond. It is a fantastic history of the world from and archaeological, linguistic, and anthropological approach. He also explains why the history of the world is such. Of the three choices, if I'm not mistaken, the Egyptians were took the first steps towards a sedentary lifestyle.

The Babylonians developed the Pythagorean Theorem. Geometry could have been the first breakthrough. However, the Ancient Egyptians used surveying. They may have used Trigonometry. We do not know. As the Shanghai library becomes available on the Internet we will learn what the ancient Chinese knew. We still can not read the language of the Indus people.
