This is a complicated question. Legally, in the United States, there is no religious "test" for marriage - any one person of any faith may choose to marry any other person of any faith provided certain requirements about age, degree of consanguinity, gender (in some states) and consent are met. In most developed countries, the above holds true. In developing and undeveloped countries, there may be national laws prohibiting interfaith marriages - you would need to check with the individual country.

In terms of religion, this will vary by faith - some denominations refuse to offer the blessing of marriage on interfaith couples while other denominations accept the differing faiths. A few denominations and several religions (Greek Orthodox, orthodoz Judaism and Catholicism come to mind) typically require both couples to be of the faith in which the marriage is solemnized and will perform the required conversion ceremony either prior to or during the marriage ceremony.

In terms of family harmony, you may need to proceed with caution - some families have no problem with interfaith marriages while other families may see you as betraying your family and turning your back on God. You will have to judge what reaction both peoples' families will offer to the engagement.

In terms of personal relationships, developing a serious personal relationship with a person of another faith can be difficult and require a great deal of adjustment and open-mindedness. Some couples find their different faiths bring them closer together, while other couples eventually find their different faiths drive them apart. It takes honest, open, trusting communication and a sincere desire by both people to make an interfaith marriage work. However, the same can be said of intrafaith marriages as well.

From a theological perspective, Paul commands Christians not to be joined together with non-Christians, i.e., "unequally yoked" (2 Corinthians 6:14). This is because Christians are called to a totally different, and often contrary, lifestyle.

Another Answer

Saint Paul is not always opposed to marriage to non-Christians, which means we can choose a passage according to which side of the debate we wish to support. In First Corinthians chapter 7, he says if a Christian man has an unbelieving wife, he should continue to live with her, just as a Christian woman with an unbelieving husband should live with him, unless the unbeliever wishes to separate. The upshot is that theology does not really give us a ruling either way. We should simply follow our hearts.

No, Christians should not marry non-Christians. II Corinthians 6:14 says "Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?" The issue is that your potential spouse may bring you down more than you bring them up.

Answer:

Although the above statement is the one which Christians try to adhere to, there are many Christians who do marry non-Christians.

Some of these marriages can lead to the spouse becoming a Christian.

Some of them do cause the once-faithful believer to fall away.

Others remain in a state of tension because of the pull between spouses and their different beliefs (or non-beliefs), and this tension easily extends to the children.

Answer:

Of course they do. Most of North America and Europe are secular societies where there are few, if any, controls on who can marry who. They also marry into diferent racial groups, different cultural groups and so on. The couples have as much chance of being happy together as any other pairing. Sometimes one partner or the other converts, sometimes both convert to another group, sometimes both maintain their own religions and still others just don't care about religion at all and drop all semblence of a non-secular life. Relatives that don't agree are the main source of contention.

Separate Answer: Christians do often marry Non-Christians however The Bible warns us not to. As mentioned in the first answer, 2 Corinthians 6:14-16 says:

Do not become unevenly yoked with unbelievers. For what fellowship do righteousness and lawlessness have? Or what sharing does light have with darkness?15 Further, what harmony is there between Christ and Beâ²li·al? Or what does a believer share in common with an unbeliever? 16 And what agreement does God's temple have with idols? For we are a temple of a living God; just as God said: "I will reside among them+ and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people."+

This scripture is telling us not to marry those whose beliefs differ from ours. This is set into place because God does not want to us to be misled just as Solomon was. Initially Solomon was a man of good faith that was chosen by Kind David before his death to inherit the throne. Solomon was also broadly known as a wise man. However, he began to take for himself many wives that were not servants of Jehovah and as a result he was easily persuaded to serve the gods of his many wives. This account can be found in the book of 1 Kings Chapters 1-11 and in 2 Chronicles Chapters 1-9. You can also visit the website: jw.org for videos, articles, and much more! I would advise anyone reading this page to NOT GO TO JW.ORG. this stands for Jehovah's Witnesses. It is a cult Google it and you will see the truth about them. My name is Bruce Eisermann .I'm a Devout Christian. If you want the God Given Truth I suggest you go to intouch.org. It's led by Dr. Charles Stanley and can be heard on radio Stations across the country. You will NEVER hear JW.org on any media. THIS IS THE TRUTH.

In most denominations/sects within the Christian faith in the United States, couples are free to choose their spouses. However, they normally need some form of instruction from their Church before doing so.

Yes, it is possible. However, there will be problems in that marriage. Church, Jesus, etc. Christians should marry Christians who love Jesus Christ.

answer: of course this is true^they should not get married tho. the Bible says do not be uneqully yoked. this is not talking about an egg! it is sayin: if ur a christian do not marry a non christian (do not date a non christian). there will be problems in the home!!

Answer:

First off, there is no legal requirement around religion involved in getting married except in the minds of the parties involved as it is a civil matter regulated by the government not churches. The purpose of marriage is more for property rights than any other purpose. A Christian and member of the Church of the Flying Spghetti Monster (or any other combination of faiths) can marry or date. Assuming that they care enough about religion to ever discuss it, they can:

  • agree never to discuss religion and each go their own way
  • both attend both services
  • either convert to the faith of the other
  • both go to a third faith related to neither
  • both become atheists

It is, however, many couples find it wise to talk these things over before they become a problems. It is also wise not to let the families interfere as it is not their business how the couple live their lives.

When it comes to the marriage ceremony, the option of a civil service is always open if the clergy of the sides cannot act like adults.

In a secular society as exists in most western societies there is no legal reason to not marry a person of nay other (or no) religion. The religion of the partners in a marriage does not matter in having a good marriage. Most Christian congregations have a distinct fraction of members that are non-Christian who appear to be (and are) good spouses even though they have to remain"in the closet" to avoid the rancour that their true position would cause in the community. All of the arguments presented against "mixed marriages" are fallacious (based on false premises) and aimed at the control of other's lives through fear and shame.

Can Christians only date other Christians or can the date non Christians aswell?

Christians can date non-Christians. But, be ready for problems with your marriage. Because if you like going to church, the other person won't, and that can end with long fights. When he/she comes home drunk, its not gonna be pretty. My advice: Don't marry that girl/boy just because she/he's "hot" God looks on the inside, so should you. Marry that person because that person loves God. Be a godly family.

Is there anything against a Christian and a Catholic dating?

Is there anything against a Christian and a human being dating? Christians are human beings! And Catholics are Christians. Here are the four main branches of Christianity: * Orthodox (Greek Orthodox; Russian Orthodox, etc) * Catholic * Protestant * Non-denominational Christians The Catholic Church has traditionally encouraged its members to marry other Catholics; for this reason the Church encourages limiting steady dating to other Catholics. However, in practice Catholics in good standing frequently date and marry non-Catholics.

What Christians used to call non-Christians?

Some non-Christians are called 'atheists'. Some are called 'Buddhists; others are called 'Hindus'. Others are called 'pagans'. To my knowledge, the original Bible text does NOT call anyone 'pagan'. There are Jews and Gentiles; but both of them can become Christians.

What are non-Christians?

AnswerSometimes people are described by what they are not, an arguably insulting practice but also sometimes a convenient one. 'Non-Christians' are people who are not Christians, whether because they are Jewish, Muslim, Hindu or atheist, and so on. In the same way, 'non-Muslims' would include Christians and others.
