Gutzon Borglum (1867-1941) was the designer and sculptor. A crew of up to 400 men used dynamite, pneumatic jackhammers, and chisels to carve the massive heads. The construction began October 4, 1927 and received US government help beginning in 1933. The individual heads were dedicated as completed, and the entire structure declared completed by October 31, 1941, 7 months after Borglum's death.

∙ 16y agoIt took 14 years for sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his crew to carve 60-foot-tall faces of four U.S. presidents. On October 4, 1927 the first actual work of carving began. Washington's face was dedicated on July 4, 1934.Thomas Jefferson was dedicated in 1936.Abraham Lincoln was dedicated on September 17, 1937, the one hundred fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Constitution.In 1939, the same year modern Plumbing and night lighting was installed at the memorial, Theodore Roosevelt's figure was dedicated.
