the voters of each state and the District of Columbia U. S. citizens "vote for president" in November, they are really voting for a slate of electors who have pledged their support for a particular ticket (a presidential candidate and his/her running mate).
On Election Day, the day after the 1st Monday of November, registered voters in all of the states and the District of Columbia go to the polls and vote for their preference for president and vice president. In Maine and Nebraska, two of the electors appointed from each state will be supporters and the presidential and vice presidential candidates who received a simple majority of the votes in the state (the winners of the popular vote in each state), and one elector will be appointed based on the popular vote within each congressional district. In each of the other 48 states and the District of Columbia, all of the electors that the state is allowed to appoint will be supporters of the winners of the popular vote in the state.
A simple majority of votes means more votes than anyone else; it does not need to be over 50% like the electoral vote count.
