Cook's 'cover mission' was to observe the Transit of Venus from Tahiti. This scientific endeavour was neede at the time to find the diameter of the Earth. When this task was compleed he opened secret orders from the Bbritish government to find 'Terra Incognito'. Unkown lands to the East of Indonesia. The Dutch had partially mapped the North West coast of the then unknown continent of Australia and Cook was sent to complete this task. He also foud New Zealand and claimed these two territories for the crown of Britain.
