Alexander the Great took over the Persian Empire. After his early death his generals divided the empire into kingdoms of their own. We today call them the Hellenistic kingdoms (= like Greek).

Alexander, king of Macedonia which was not a Greek state, conquered the Persian Empire in a 10 year campaign; he died after that. His generals divided the conquered territories into kingdoms of their own.
