When France left Vietnam in 1954 part of the country was controlled by the communists, and part was democratically controlled. The Communist controlled are became North Vietnam, and the Democratic area became South Vietnam.

They were the resistance element within South Vietnam and were largely controlled by the Communist North Vietnamese.
Not sure how they were different but I do know that the US supported the south because we basically wanted to stop the spread of communism. The north was controlled by communists and we didn't want to south likewise
