Joshua and Caleb
It is estimated that approximately 2 million Israelites died in the wilderness during the 40 years of wandering before reaching the Promised Land.
The children of Israel could have reached the Promised Land almost 40 years earlier.
The Hebrews were bound for the Promised Land (Canaan) after they left Egypt. However, due to their negativity and fear of the inhabitants of Canaan, they ended up wandering in the desert for forty years.
The book of exodus tells us about the wandering for 40 years.
It took them seven years. The forty years of which you asked were spent wandering the wilderness before entering the land. The reason they wandered for 4 decades is they believed the faithless 10 spies on the first approach.
The Israelites probably could have (and did) reached the Promised Land in 6-9 months. Because of their disobedience, they had to wander for 40 years.
40 years of wandering in the wilderness far from established habitats
Moses led the Israelites through the desert for more than 40 years, but it was actually Joshua who led them into the Promise Land because Moses had disobeyed God and was forbidden to enter.
Moses died in the desert around 1450BC....he lived 120 years....40 years with Pharoah....40 years in the desert and 40 years wandering with the children of Israel....So the Red Sea was parted 40 years before Moses death or 40 years before Joshua took the children of Israel into the promised land.....So around 1490BC
At the time when it was promised, Abraham and his family were living in that land. Except for a couple of hundred years that they spent in Egypt, and the 40 years returning to the land from Egypt, some of his descendants have lived there continuously ever since, and those who were forced out at various points in history have begun to return in modern times.
God promised to send the Israelites to the Promised Land (Canna, or Palestine). They walked 40 years in the desert with Moses (though he never made it to the Promised Land, he died when they could see it in the distance and Joshua took over).
It depends when you're counting from. According to traditional chronology, the Israelites entered the Promised Land in 1272 BCE. This was:430 years after God promised it to Abraham in Genesis ch.15;325 years after God promised it to Isaac in Genesis 26:3;263 years after God promised it to Jacob in Genesis ch.28.
