The Royal Mail. Post codes are broken down into 4 groups in two alphanumeric pairs. A(A)0(0) 0(0) AA; where A represents a letter and 0 is a number. Their designations are:

Area = First set of character(s)

District = First set of number(s)

Space

Sector = Second set of number(s)

Unit = Second set of characters

Example CV37 9HH = Area (CV = Coventry) 37 = District (Stratford) 9 = Sector (Shottery) HH = Unit (a particular section of Cottage Lane) Precicely Anne Hathaway's Cottage.

Canada Post operate a similar system except there, the formula is A0A 0A0
