The first to patent a process for fractional refining of petroleum was a Scottish chemist named James Young. He received an English patent in 1850, and with his partners, Edward Meldrum and E. W. Binney, opened the first commercial refineries, one at Bathgate and one at Glasgow, Scotland. His process involved breaking the crude oil down to recover primarily "parrafin oil" -- called kerosene in the US -- and heavier oils used as lubricants. The more volatile contents, including the gasoline, were routinely discarded by literally dumping them on the ground or in a nearby stream, since there was no market for them at the time. During the second half of the 19th century, before the development of electric lighting, kerosene became the favored fuel for lighting, quickly surpassing the use of oil rendered from sperm whales.

Byproducts of oil in use today are many and varied, and include:

  • Gasoline
  • LP gas (propane)
  • Kerosene
  • Diesel fuel and other fuel oils
  • Naphtha
  • Parrafin wax
  • Lubricating oils
  • Petroleum coke
  • Sulfur (a waste product)
  • Asphalt cement (sometimes described as what's left after everything else is taken out)

It should also be mentioned that oilfields are usually prolific producers of natural gas (methane), pockets of which are often encountered and released by oil drillers.
