Upon Sacagawea's death, her husband Toussaint Charbonneau gave William Clark full custody of their children. This included Jean-Baptiste who was born during the expedition and who Clark had affectionately nicknamed "Pompy" or "Little Pomp." Clark also adopted their daughter Lisette, who was born six years after the expedition ended but who did not survive infancy. William Clark himself already had a big brood to take care of, but he nonetheless gave Jean-Baptiste a formal education in St. Louis at age 18 he traveled around Europe and even Africa. He then returned to become a scout, mountain man and a 49er in the California Gold Rush. He died of pneumonia near Danner, Oregon at age 61.
