In those days, senators were elected by the state legislature. Pierce's chief rivals for the position were Jonathan Harvey, John Page and Charles Atherton.

He ran and won in 1852.
The statue is on the grounds of the state capital on New Hampshire. The Pierce family was much loved in New Hampshire. His father was a two-term governor and Franklin was a US senator, active in the state house,a noted lawyer in the state and a general in the Mexican War before he became President. He was the only man from NH to run for president, much less win.
No- Pierce was not a Whig. His predecessors Taylor and Fillmore were the last Whig presidents and Pierce's opponent, Winfield Scott was the man to run for President as a Whig.
Senator Eugene McCarthy
Mrs. Pierce did not like Washington, did not want to live there and did not want Franklin to run for President. She had had enough of Washington when he was a Senator. Then in January, not long before his term began in March, their only remaining child, Benjy was killed in a tragic train accident. She went to the White House, but spent most of her time upstairs crying. Franklin's other personal problem was a long-time inclination to drink alcohol. Franklin's political problem was his party leaders. Pierce was nominated from New Hampshire without much of a national following. He was not expected to be a leader and the bosses resented him when he tried. The nation was split by slavery and the civil war was not far away-- it was a hard time to be President.
He was not known very well outside of New Hampshire where he was popular. As President, he was blamed for the situation in Kansas and was not popular when it was time to run for a second term.
You have to be 30 years old in able to run for US Senator.
Pierce was drafted by his party to run after they could not agree on any of the four front-runners for the nomination. He was a loyal party man and felt it was his duty to serve, but probably did not dream that he would be nominated when he allowed his name to be put into for consideration.
Yes, Senator John McCain can run again. Richard Nixon did that, losing to Senator John F. Kennedy in 1960 but winning against Vice President Hubert Humphrey in 1968. He then ran for re-election in 1972
1852
He ran against Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1940 presidential race. Willkie was a republican.
