Originally the Soviets supplied the MiG17, then discontinued it and supplied only the MiG21. The Red Chinese picked up where the USSR left off and supplied their version of the MiG17, the J5 series jet. The Chicom (Chinese Communist) J6 (MiG19) was supplied only by Red China; the Soviets never supplied North Vietnam with MiG19s. Both the USSR and Red China supplied tanks, artillery, small arms, trucks, missiles, radar systems, and torpedo boats.
Technically the VC were rebels as they were fighting their own government (RVN). Until the HCM trail was fully operational-and operating well-the "rebels" took their supplies (to include weapons) from any source they could...battlefield pick-ups being the most common method. Raiding ammo dumps or armories and ambushing government troops (ARVNs) and taking their weapons and supplies (which might be considered battlefield pick-ups).
Bottom line for this description: Whatever the ARVNs got from the US might often end up in the hands of the rebels (VC).
After the war advanced along in time and the NVA got further and deeper involved (and the HCM trail was operating extremely well) the VC began to get SKS and later AK47s. All of which were supplied by the USSR/Red Chinese (called Chicom weapons during the war) & Warsaw Pact nations.
They received assistance from several nations, primarily of which, was Russia, or at that time, the Soviet Union. All other supporting countries were allies of Russia.
North Vietnamese soldiers were referred to as the NVA (North Vietnamese Army) by the GI's in Vietnam, during the war. Southern Communist soldiers living in South Vietnam and fighting in South Vietnam, were called the Viet Cong (VC).
By sea along the coast, or the Ho Chi Minh trail which went thru Laos and Cambodia. Nothing went thru the DMZ (17th Parallel); without getting completely destroyed by airpower or artillery. The "Z" was no-man's land.
South Vietnam. In the Vietnam war when south Vietnam lost the communism took over south Vietnam. Before that north Vietnam & south Vietnam were different colonies.
The Ho Chi Minh Trail served to transport troops and supplies from North Vietnam into South Vietnam. It followed the Western border of both countries, passing through Laos and Cambodia before crossing into South Vietnam.
Viet Congs: North communist Vietnamese supporters of the communist Front in North Vietnam during the Vietnam War (known in Vietnam as the American War). The Viet Congs fought against both the government/military of South Vietnam and the armed forces of the United States between 1959 and 1975. They were initially a loose grouping of guerrilla fighters. Quick Note: South Vietnam/South Vietnamese didn't want the communist takeover from communist North Vietnam, they wanted to be a democratic country. U.S. entered the war to stop the spread of communism and support the democratic South Vietnam.

When the French left Vietnam, the country was divided in to two parts, north Vietnam which was under communist control, and south Vietnam that was officially democratic, but was actually in practice a totalitarian state. The Norht Vietnamese beleived that the south was a colony of foreign powers and wanted to unite Vietnam into one country, under communist rule. South Vietnam and the United States wanted to prevent the communists from taking over south Vietnam. The war was started by south vietnamese rebels who were opposed to the corruption of the south vietnamese regime. North Vietnam supported these rebels who were commonly known as the Viet Cong. The United States supported South Vietnam in spite of its corrupt government in the belief that it was better to have a corrupt government in south Vietnam than a communist government.
South Vietnam are the non-communist side of Vietnam, which supported by the US vastly on war supplies, troops, and other thing to fights against the North Vietnam (the communist side).
US supplies arrived by ship and airplanes. The USSR & Red China supplied enemy war material, which was shipped into Haiphong Harbor in North Vietnam and across the Red Chinese border; then TRUCKED down into South Vietnam via the Ho Chi Minh trail.
In Vietnam, which is a medium-sized country to the south of China. Vietnam was divided into two countries, North Vietnam, which was Communist, and South Vietnam, which was a highly unstable Capitalist dictatorship. The worst of the fighting happened down at the southern end and involved the Americans and communist rebels in the south, who were known as the Viet Cong. There was also plenty of fighting on the border.
Via the Ho Chi Minh trail.
. What concession did the United States receive from North Vietnam in the Paris Peace Accords?
