During WW1 everyone rotated between who had sentry duty (but not necessarily the officers.) So basically any private was up for grabs when it came to sentry duty.

Why was sentry duty dangerous?

Sentry duty was dangerous, because the individual was vulnerable to attack. There were points in the rounds at which the individual might be exposed to the aim of weapons such as arrows, cannons, or lances. There were only select individuals who did sentry duty. There could be far fewer numbers of sentries than of any invading army or any groups of attackers. Additionally, the weather could get in the way at critical points of the duty. For example, vision might be obscured by fog, heavy rain, intense sunlight, or overcast or darkened skies.

Daily routine of soldier in World War 1?

They built new trenches or repaired old ones. They also moved supplies up and down and spent long hours on sentry duty or spying on enemies trenches. They also wrote letters to their families and there were specialized soldiers called sappers which dug tunnels below enemy trenches and placed huge mines there.

Why were the trenches built in the world war?

Trench warfare used several different types of trenches. Firing trenches were used by soldiers to protect themselves while firing their weapons at their enemy. Cover trenches were often built next to the firing trenches as a second line of defense in case the enemy captured the firing trench. Support trenches were used as rest areas for off-duty troops, who sometimes lived in dugouts excavated in the sides of the trench. A network of reserve and communications trenches was used to bring supplies and fresh troops to the front.
