Ethnically speaking, by 1900 New Mexico was more Mexican than American; however the white minority had a hold on all positions of influence -- including politics and economy -- making New Mexico an American territory.New Mexico had been acquired from Mexico since the end of the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). By 1900, it had already adopted the American law and traditions, but the Mexican population represented 60% of the territory's population, followed by Caucasians (23%) and Native Americans (17%).
Mexico acts as a land bridge between North America and South America, allowing it to be a natural trade route between both subcontinents. It also has shores on both the Pacific Ocean as well as the Gulf of Mexico, allowing to have harbors on both seas, facilitating trade with both Northern Pacific countries (Japan, China, South Korea) as well as with Northern Atlantic countries (Europe).

The Americans crossed into Mexico and were fired upon. America then declared war, this resulted in the Mexican-American war which was won by America and as a result took much more land.
After the Texas Annexation (when America admitted Texas into the Union as the 28th state), America claimed that Mexico was trespassing onto American soil. America claimed that the border between Mexico and The United States was the Rio Grande River. However, Mexico said it was the Nueces River. Many people believe that America claimed that the border was the Rio Grande River so they could easily acquire more land from Mexico.
