Persecution of Jews in Russia became widespread under Tzar Alexander III in 1881. He enacted many anti-Jewish laws. Anti-Jewish activities continued under Tzar Nicolas II. Under communist rule, Lenin both continued and enhanced antisemitic policies and issued decrees against antisemitism. Under Stalin, antisemitism in the Soviet Union got worse, particularly in the 1948-1953 time period. Anti-Jewish policies were toned down, but not eliminated under Nikita Krushchev, and enhanced again under Brezhnev as part of Soviet anti-Israeli policy.
