Hawaii was not purchased. Hawaii's government was overthrown on Jan. 17, 1893, by a relatively small group of men, most of them American by birth or heritage, who seized control of the Islands with the backing of American troops sent ashore from a warship in Honolulu Harbor. Queen Lili`uokalani yielded her throne, under protest, in order to avoid bloodshed, trusting that the United States government would right the wrong that had been done to her and the Hawaiian people.

Hawaii was not purchased. It was an independent kingdom that was taken over and eventually annexed by the US in July 1898. The growing power of US and other foreign commercial interests had resulted in the so-called "Bayonet Constitution" of 1887, which reduced control by the native islanders. This was followed by the takeover of the islands in 1893 by a provisional government of US colonialists, who established the Republic of Hawaii in 1894. After the US Senate refused to ratify a treaty with the republic, the 1898 Newlands Resolution annexed Hawaii as a US territory, and it became a US state in 1959.
