From what little evidence we have Druids were the guardians of the unwritten customary law of a community. They were called upon in matters of law in both public and private matters. In actuality any member of the learned class was referred to as Druid in Celtic times. This included bards, ovates, scholars, priests, scientists, and teachers.

They resided over matters of law and judgement, intervening in disputes and handing out punishments; the most severe of which was excommunication from the community. They paid no taxes, and were exempt from military service.

Druid training could take up to 20 years to complete, nearly all of it passed on in oral tradition with no written records.

Druids and Druidry are a fascinating topic to study. You may find the following link helpful.
