Whittaker Chambers named seven (7) former Federal officials among others as forming part of his Washington-based Soviet spy ring during the 1930s, on August 3, 1948, under subpoena before the House on Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). Among those named were Harry Dexter White (who had a heart attack while denying allegations on the witness stand and died three days later) and Alger Hiss. Four other former Federal officials pled the Fifth; brother Donald Hiss also denied allegations.

The U.S. Department of Justice indicted Alger Hiss on two counts of perjury in December 1948. In January 1950, Hiss was sentenced to jail, later released early on parole for good behavior.

Why was Alger Hiss important to Nixon's career?

After two trials during 1949, a jury found Alger Hiss, a former high-ranking State Department official, accused of by Whittaker Chambers in August 1948 of being a communist and Soviet spy, guilty on two counts of perjury.Since the perjury charges related to the nature of Hiss' relationship as a member a Soviet spy ring in Washington, DC, run by first by Harold Ware and then by Chambers during the 1930s, the guilty verdict implies that Hiss was indeed a member of that Soviet spy ring.
