According to notes on the web, Flemish scientist Jan Baptista van Helmont was the first to describe Carbon Dioxide around 1630. At this point it was called a "Wood Gas". It wasn't until the mid 1700's when it was further characterized, and in 1823 it was liquefied, and in 1834 made into dry ice.

In the late 1800's, the idea of Infrared radiation absorption was discovered, and by the mid 1900's the idea of greenhouse gasses was beginning to be formulated.

"The Population Bomb", a book written by Paul R. Ehrlich in 1968 discussed CO2 as a greenhouse gas, but at that time there was no consensus whether pollution would cause cooling of the earth, or greenhouse gasses would cause warming of the earth.
