Vasco da Gama of Portugal 'discovered' Calicut in 1498 A.D. This is however a misnomer. Trade with India was prevalent since ancient times. However, with the Arab reign over Middle East, trade between India and Europe was regulated (and restricted) by the Arabs. Hence there was a motivation for Europeans to discover an alternate (sea-bound) route to the Indian subcontinent, which da Gama successfully did in 1498, when he landed at Calicut.
Trade between India (Calicut included) and Europe however persisted for centuries before this as well.
