The Spanish conquistador Francisco Vázquez de Coronado led an expedition in the 1540s to explore the Southwest region of North America in search of the legendary Seven Cities of Cíbola, reputed to be filled with riches. While he did not find the legendary cities, he did explore large parts of present-day Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Kansas.
