The US Supreme Court ordered an end to the recount of questionable votes in Florida, where various forms of ballots had made many votes unclear. The close victory for George W. Bush in the state's official tally was thereby upheld, and Bush became the 43rd President, defeating the incumbent Vice President, Al Gore.
