He was able to deliver the information of the whereabouts of the British army to John Hancock and Samuel Adams in Lexington, and additionally was able to spread the news to the American troops that "the regulars are coming out," meaning "the British were coming," along the way. Ironically, after he had delivered the news, Revere accompanied by Samuel Prescott and William Dawes, decided to take a ride to Concord and were detained by British troops in Lincoln near Concord.
