The first compound microscope was made circa 1590 in The Netherlands. Hans Lippershey, Sacharias Jansen, and Hans Jenssen, all eyeglass makers, have each been given credit for the invention, using two separated lenses to greatly increase magnification.
About 1670, Anton van Leeuwenhoek dramatically increased the magnifying power of the simple microscope by creating small spheres of high-quality glass, from which powerful lenses could be made.
Credit for the first compound microscope (multiple lenses) is generally given to Zacharias Jansen and John Lippershey of the Netherlands, in 1590.
Anton von Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) famously used a microscope in the study of living things, becoming "the father of microbiology."

Galileo is credited with the first compound microscope. Zacharias Janssen invented the microscope that we use today.
A simple version of a compound microscope was used to discover cells. Robert Hooke first described cells in 1665, using a compound microscope. Soon after, Anton van Leeuwenhoek also studied cells using a microscope with more advanced lenses.
Matthias Schleiden was the first to study plant cells under the microscope! =)

What is considered to be the first "true" microscope was invented in Holland in about 1595.
The first usable compound microscope people used was about 1655 by Robert hooke! :)
