Richard Nixon's Vice President, Gerald R. Ford, assumed the presidency when Nixon resigned in 1974. Ford served the remainder of Nixon's second term and ran in the 1976 election. However, he was defeated by James E. (Jimmy) Carter.

After his resignation Richard Nixon was succeeded to the Presidency by is appointed vice president Gerald Ford. Ford selected Nelson Rockefeller to be his vice president. After he was approved The Ford/Nelson White House marked the 1st time the United States had a President & Vice president who were not elected.
