The first explorer to arrive in Connecticut was Dutch explorer Adriaen Block. Soon after his exploration of Connecticut, John Winthrop, a member of the Massachusetts colony, received permission in 1636 to make a colony at Old Saybrook, which is at the mouth of the Connecticut River. During this time, a large group of settlers, Puritans, led by Thomas Hooker and coming out of Massachusetts, settled in the region, soon incorporation Old Saybrook into it. He soon broke from Massachusetts to create a Puritan settlement at Hartford in 1636.
