Three presidents fought in the American Revolution: George Washington and James Monroe. Washington was the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army from its inception in 1775 to the end of the war. James Monroe left college to enlist and was a major in the colonial army when the war ended. In addition, Andrew Jackson enlisted in a militia unit when he was only fourteen years old.

Several other presidents provided political leadership during the war - John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison - but never actually took up arms against Great Britain
