Who founded New Jersey and why?

John Berkeley, and George Carteret 1664. 1st Baronet (George) Carteret had been the former governor of the island of Jersey in the Channel Islands, UK. In recognition of Carterets aid to the king during his exile to Jersey, the land now known as New Jersey was gifted to Carteret by King Charles II.
