The ancient Greeks had the first schools, but schools in the United States first appeared in the colonies in 1630 and in 1635 the Boston Latin School was opened. It was the first town support school and it established a pattern of local control over the educational system. This was further strengthened by the passage of the Massachusetts old Deluder Satan Act requiring every town of at least 50 households hire a teacher of reading and writing. A town of a hundred or more was required to open a grammar school.
