"In the 1830's and 1840's most Americans were convinced that their nation was destined to occupy all the land from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. This conviction came to be known as "Manifest Destiny." Some Americans even thought that they would take over Canada and Mexico as well. Robert Gray established the first U.S. claim in Oregon. Through diplomatic negotiation with Great Britain in 1846, the United States acquired the Oregon territory, a vast area of 285,000 square miles."
