I believe, even though the south had lost. they had the better end of it. They had ready generals and men who knew how to fight on foot and horseback. The north did not have ready generals at the time the war started. Overall towards the end of the war the north had the best strategy by taking the forts and capturing the river.
I think the Confedrates had pretty good commanders but so did the Union
The US had about 2.1 million soldiers and seamen over the course of the Rebellion.
The Confederacy had about 1.1 million.
The North. By far.
South
The South's strategy during the Civil War was to get Great Britian's support. >The South's strategy was to use the great military leaders and commanders they had in order to defeat the North. With the North having multiple advantages, the South used their strongest factor: military training.
the union won the civil war !
Grant's ending of the system of prisoner-exchange. It meant the Confederates were doomed to run out of men.
I don't know if this is right or wrong but this is what my teacher said to me, That the military strategy each side develop is that they defend there their own home and territory. I don't care if this answer is wrong, I tried my best anyway. - Jennifer
The US military draft began in the US Civil War (1861-1865).
The military strategy that won the civil war is total war which was concentrated on the South's economy. Burning cities, destroying farms or anything that aided the enemy's war effort as well as the North's far superior industrial base led to the South's defeat.
Keep the ports open
Many if not most military analysts and historians refer to the military term of strategy which is broad in scope. Strategy is tied into both the military plans along with to the ideas about a nation's political objectives for which a war is being fought. In the US Civil War, as an example, the way to reach the Unions political goals was to formulate a successful military strategy.
At the time of the US Civil War, military & political leaders often used the term of military policy. It had its meaning at the time, but a clearer understanding of the term is better defined by the following;Strategy defines how military force is used in the pursuit of a political driven goal. This by no means is "splitting hairs". It places the method and planning of force to meet the political goals of a government.

The weakness in the Confederate strategy was that only in the last months of the war did it have an overall military commander. Davis named Lee General-in-Chief.

After the US Civil War, some historians tagged the Union's strategy in the last two years of the war as "total war". In today's modern military view that term does not fit the Union strategy and in fact was never used in the war. Currently, military historians call the last two years of that war a war of "exhaustion". In modern terms this means that face to face the Union could not defeat the South. But, by exhausting the amount of supplies available, the Southern armies could not take on the field of battle.
