∙ 12y agoAchilles is the son of Peleus and Thetis. Thetis was an Oceanid, and ocean nymph and was courted by both Zeus and Poseidon until Prometheus prophesied that Thetis would have a son that outshone his father. Both gods promptly ended their courtship and encouraged Thetis to marry Peleus.
After Achilles' birth, fearful for her son's safety, the nymph, holding him by the heel, dipped the baby into the river Styx, washing away his mortal weaknesses. This is the source of his only vulnerability: his heel.
