Charlemagne
When Charlemagne became king of the Franks in 768, he ruled over what is now France and western Germany. After Charlemagne defeated the Lombards in Italy in 800, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne as the emperor of the Romans. Charlemagne gained control of most of Italy. During Charlemagne's reign, he had nearly doubled the amount of land he controlled and had united much of western and central Europe.
Western Europe had a much stronger economy. Eastern Europe fell into poverty and more Eastern European countries became police states.

Charlemagne was a successful leader because he (whether its good or not) converted much of western Europe to Christianity, he unified western Europe, he extended his empire, he also blended many traditions (germanic Roman and Christian). He also set up a strong and efficient government.
Charlemagne was a resident of the Frankish Kingdom, which was a Medieval European kingdom that existed from the 5th to the 9th century AD. He was also crowned as the Holy Roman Emperor in 800 AD.

Western Europe's culture is modernized, technological, urban, etc. while Eastern Europe's still remains agricultural, less advanced, native, etc.
Eastern Europe was traditionally where most Orthodox Christians were. Central Europe was more traditionally Catholic, while Western Europe was a mixture of Catholicism and Protestantism. Since World War II, Europe has become much less religious. The world? The main religions seem to be Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism. Industrialized nations are getting more secular, Islam is increasing.
Politics are much like any other places that are democracies (United States, Canada, etc.). Elections are held for office, people run, citizens vote, etc. Most of Western Europe is a representative democracy/democracy, however, there are some constitutional monarchies (though most have parliaments).
