Francis Bacon's 'Essays' were published in 1597, and the OED gives it as the first use of the word in the sense of a short literary work in the English language. It was certainly a well-established literary term by the 18th Century.

This was arguably the first real & still recognised "essay".
Adam Ferguson's essays were said to have inspired Karl Marx to put his thoughts with ink onto paper.
(also without Sir Walter Scott, there would have been no modern novel's).
