There are several pioneers of heavy metal music: AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Rainbow, and Deep Purple are good examples. Black Sabbath is the first heavy metal band. Their approach was more of a sludge/doom metal style. If you want to get extremely technical about it, Beethoven was the first metal head.
The phrase heavy metal (in music) was literally invented by Steppenwolf - Born to be Wild (1968).
For opinion on the question, read on.
The Kinks' You Really Got Me (1964) was probably the first example of a metal riff (where Davies reportedly slashed his amp with a knife to get distortion), and Hendrix pioneered the guitar histrionics that characterise a lot of metal. Most people say that 'metal' itself was created by Black Sabbath (1968) though; riffs that were no longer so bluesy, the occult theme, the heaviness, the power chords, the pessimistic outlook. It's possible to trace most aspects of metal back to Black Sabbath.
Other bands such as Blue Cheer (1967) and High Tide (1969) are also credited with inventing metal.
I'd also like to shout out Gustav Holst (1916) and Jeff Beck, who is credited with being the first guitarist to create a way to control guitar distortion (circa 1966) and, (just my opinion) recorded the first metal-style guitar solo on Heart Full of Soul with the Yardbirds, released in June 1965.
Led Zeppelin. They captured the rough sound, the attitude and mystique of metal, the loudness, and the obsession with the occult. Obviously metal has gone through various changes through the years, but Led Zeppelin predates Black Sabbath.
Black Sabbath.
Originally a Blues band named Earth they changed their named to Black Sabbath to reflect their interest in the occult. After passing by the cinema and seeing the movie "Black Sabbath" playing, one of the members thought it was very strange that people would pay money to have the s*** scared out of them. They changed their name and started to incorporate this type of theme into their own music; this helped evolve what was latter called Heavy Metal.
Ian Gillian of Deep Purple was one of the pioneers of heavy metal vocals. Check out the song "Child In Time" for a perfect example.
The first metal band was Black Sabbath, and Ozzy Osbourne was the vocalist with them. Robert Plant and Gillan have also been cited. And btw, it's Gillan not Gillian.
Well the band "Death" is the first band considered to be death metal.
-What about Possessed? They came out like 2 years before Death...
It is Link Wray who created it by playing a harsh sound on the Electric Guitar in fifths.
Led zeppelin.
Heavy Metal was originally coming from Rock. Because Rock isn't that hard like Heavy Metal and Heavy Metal was invented, it shows the difference between both music genres. Heavy Metal must have hard beats as same as country music needs accustic guitars and heartbroken lyrics. Same as techno needs infinite amounts of the same beats with few breaks, but the rythm is the same all the time in a loop.
No.... Aerosmith is not considered "heavy metal". Although some of their songs came close to it.... But none of their music is considered heavy metal.
