Albert Einstein

It was not discovered as it did not then exist, we had to invent it ourselves.

It was actually Max Planck and others who 'quantized' matter, and even light, after Newton and Boscovitch.

The first atomic theories go back to ancient Greece and India 2000 to 3000 years ago. The idea of atoms was first proposed in the 5th century B.C. by the philosophers Leucippus and Democritus. However, the formal exposition of a science based atomic theory was made by John Dalton, who lived 1766 - 1844.

The modern atomic theories originated between 1789 and 1799 but did not reach its current form until the early 1930s when Werner Heisenberg incorporated Quantum Theory into Ernest Rutherford's model of the atom.
