Saf-T-Pops were developed in the early 1940s by Carl W. Spohr of Chicago and Robert F. Bracke of Arlington Heights, Illinois. Curtiss Candy Company acquired the rights to Saf-T-Pops in the late 1940s. At this time, Curtiss was a division of Standard Brands, who also made the popular Baby Ruth candy bar. The idea for Saf-T-Pops, a lollipop for toddlers with a flexible fiber loop handle, was patented April 7, 1942. Spangler Candy Company bought the brand in 1978 from Curtiss Candy Company in Chicago and began production in 1979. Spangler Candy is still making Saf-T-Pops, about 500,000 each day.
George Smith invented the lollipop and named it this because of his favorite race horse, Lolly Pop. lolcandy1111;)

The Romans did not invent the lollipop. It was invented in the 19th century. George Smith claimed to be the first to invent the modern lollipop in 1908 and trademarked the lollipop name in 1931.
There is one one correct spelling (safety), but some manufacturers have used the form "Safe-T" or "Saf-T" in their brand names. One example is a lollipop variation that uses a loop instead of a stick, under the brand name "Saf-T-Pops."
