The first person to apply for a patent for a telescope was Dutch eyeglass maker Hans Lippershey (or Lipperhey). In 1608, Lippershey laid claim to a device that could magnify objects three times. His telescope had a concave eyepiece aligned with a convex objective lens.

The first observatory was built around 150 BCE on the island of Rhodes by the greatest of the pre-Christian astronomers, Hipparchus. Hipparchus was a Greek astronomer who lived from 190 to 120 BCE. He is considered to be the founder of trigonometry and the first to compile a catalog of stars. The observatory that he built on Rhodes was used to study the positions of the stars and planets.

Here are some of the other oldest observatories in the world:

Al-Shammisiyyah observatory in Baghdad, Iraq, was built in 825 AD.

Mahodayapuram Observatory in Kerala, India, was built in 869 AD.

Maragheh observatory in Azerbaijan, Iran, was built in 1259 AD.

Gaocheng Astronomical Observatory in China, was built in 1276 AD.

Ulugh Beg Observatory in Samarqand, Uzbekistan, was built in 1420 AD.

Beijing Ancient Observatory in China, was built in 1442 AD.

Constantinople Observatory of Taqi ad-Din in Turkey, was built in 1577 AD.

Uraniborg in Denmark, was built in 1580 AD.

Stjerneborg in Denmark, was built in 1581 AD.

These observatories were used to study the stars and planets, and to make astronomical calculations. They were important for the development of astronomy and navigation.

The first telescope is credited to Hans Lippershey, which he invented in 1608. Galileo Galilei is also connected to this invention, as he had greatly improved the telescope by increasing magnification.

In 1609 after hearing about a new Dutch invention called a spyglass, Galileo decided to go one better and build a larger version and aim his looking glass at the heavens. He called it a 'Telescope'. But because of his telescope and some of the most remarkable discoveries ever made, these things that Galileo was finding out were not at all like the church was spinning it.

According to scripture the Earth does not move but Galileo could prove through the lenses of his telesocpes that this was false. Needless to say the church was having none of this. In 1632 he was brought before the Inquisition in Rome only to be excommunicated from the church, and forced to recant his astronomical discoveries and to live under house arrest for the rest of his life.

The Catholic Church did in 1993 finally get around to absolve Galileo for his "blasphemies".

The earliest evidence of working telescopes were the refracting telescopes that appeared in the Netherlands in 1608. Their development is credited to three individuals: Hans Lippersheyand Zacharias Janssen, who were spectacle makers in Middelburg, and Jacob Metius of Alkmaar. Galileo greatly improved upon these designs the following year.

Galelio Galilei wasn't the first person to invent the telescope he was just at the right place at the right time

The earliest recorded discovery of the telescopic principal was by a Dutch optician named Hans Lippershay. By accident, he discovered that two lenses held in alignment with each other magnified a distant object noticeably, though it appeared upside down. Apparently, Lippershay considered this an interesting novelty, though he did record his observations. Later, Gallileo explored the possibilities of this principal, and is generally credited with the invention of the first practical telescope.
