Francis Wolle, one of the United States most prolific female inventors, invented a machine for making paper bags in 1852. She received patents for in in the US and later in France and England.
Over the years many people tried to improve on it and variations appeared, like the square bottomed bag. But Francis Wolle was the first.
I couldn't find who made the normal BAG... But I found out who made the first paper grocery bag: Margaret E. Knight (1838-1914) was an employee in a paper bag factory when she invented a new machine part to make square bottoms for paper bags. Knight can be considered the mother of the coomon day paper grocery bag.
Well ironically enough, Mary Paper.
She invented the square bottom paper bag machine.
